Introducing ÆQUORIS

ÆQUORIS in the open ocean

We’re seriously excited to share the first details of a project we’ve been keeping under wraps for years!

A Green Pioneer

ÆQUORIS (eye-kwor-iss) is a ship unlike any other. An in-house concept by Coase Design, she is capable of zero-emission transatlantic crossings, powered entirely by cryogenic liquid hydrogen.

We’ve designed her to transport passengers in comfort and safety whilst minimising the environmental impact. No fumes. No CO2 . The only thing she leaves behind is pure, clean water.

Sustainable Innovation

How does ÆQUORIS manage the impressive feat of zero-emission crossings?

We consulted with leading industry experts and postgraduate researchers in the field of marine decarbonisation to develop a robust, realistic and achievable power system, using commercially available solutions to give ÆQUORIS an unprecedented range of 4000 miles.

ÆQUORIS also features a number of innovative products and technologies, such as a system to re-capture and re-use the pure water emissions, and intergration of the type approved Viking LifeCraft marine evacuation system, removing the need for rigid lifeboats (more on this soon).

The Power in Numbers

  • 2x 2000m3 bi-lobe tanks for green hydrogen

  • 20mW installed power, 17mW operating power

  • 160 fuel cell stacks

  • 177 tonnes hydrogen consumed per crossing

  • Twin 7.5mW pods

  • 3x 1.5mW bow thrusters

A Community at Sea

ÆQUORIS isn’t a cruise ship - she’s a modern ocean liner, designed more like a small town than a typical passenger vessel.

At her core, ÆQUORIS serves as public transport, built to welcome everyone for the 7-night crossing. Her decks feature relaxing lounges, a vibrant town square with food trucks and family areas, coworking spaces, excellent fitness facilities, and her crowning jewel - the lush, rainforeststyle OASIS on the top deck.

Accommodation on ÆQUORIS ranges from balcony cabins to larger suites, as well as 200 specially designed ‘pods’ for solo and budgetconscious travellers, complete with their own dedicated lounge.

Beautiful, Inside & Out

ÆQUORIS may be a concept, but this is a fully realised design, complete with a detailed general arrangement and thoughtfully sustainable interiors - more of which will be revealed in the months ahead.

For key public spaces, we've partnered with marine interior design studio Ode&Ettle. They’ve crafted a cohesive visual identity and advised on materials, furnishings, and inclusive design - core to the vision of ÆQUORIS.

The headline renders for ÆQUORIS were created by our partners at Sodoma Atelier. We’ve loved the collaborative process of bringing the vessel to life with their detailed, evocative visuals.

Pining for the Fjords

A vessel like ÆQUORIS seemed too good to limit to a single use case. Coase Design is a Norwegian studio, based in Bergen – the gateway to the fjords.

Every day we watch cruise ships enter the harbour right outside our window, and it occurs to us that ÆQUORIS would be a fantastic platform to transport tourists and travellers cleanly and quietly through the stunning Norwegian landscapes.

From 2032, new regulations come into effect stating that all passenger ships above 10 000 GT must be zeroemission to enter Norway’s protected UNESCO World Heritage fjords. We think ÆQUORIS could be a key part of the transition to sustainable fjord exploration.

Low-Impact Design

Environmentally, ÆQUORIS is a zero-emission, low-impact marvel, but we wanted to go one step further.

We’ve kept her exterior design as pure and minimal as possible, choosing surfaces and materials that reflect and complement the landscape around her.

In the fjords, the dramatic scenery is the star of the show. In the open ocean, she becomes an extension of the natural environment. The meaning of her name is no accident – ÆQUORIS truly is ‘of the ocean’.

That’s not all…

We hope you’ve enjoyed this first taster of ÆQUORIS. There is so much more to share with you over the coming months: New interior spaces, techincal details, interviews with collaborators and plenty of behind-the-scenes content form the design process.

We’d love for you to follow along. You can connect with us on LinkedIn, Instagram, and sign up to our newsletter. 😊
